Big Data To-Do List
Big Data, Data Science, Advanced Analytics – You’ve had it on your list for years now, but you’re not quite sure how to start. The hype has changed over the years, but the essence of extracting value from your data has remained and 2017 is the year that Big Data matures as volume of data, human skill, and computational power all converge.
Some of the things I’ve learned over the past couple of years studying and working in the Big Data space is advanced analytics is hard. It is hard for companies to adapt to a data-driven culture in their decision making. It is hard for executives to weed through the BS and over promise that has been spouted by consultants and major tech firms looking to cash in on the Big Data bonanza. It is hard to find the time to dedicate to launching a data practice. The list goes on.
I’m here to tell you to start small, take an iterative approach, and focus on the minor wins before you ever try to introduce the more advanced and complicated stuff.
Are you using data visualization to its fullest potential?
Are you identifying customers that are likely to leave your service or increase their spend with you?
Do you know what the demand for your product or service is next month, quarter, year?
Have you optimized a costly process?
The answer to these questions is most likely that you have not yet achieved what you set out to do in any of these areas.
I’ve written about the 27 Things that Data Science Can Do For You Today in a past post, but the only way to scratch Big Data off your “to-do” list is to start. Let’s start with something small.
An assessment of where you are on your data journey and a few ideas on how to start will be my offer to you. If you’d like to scratch Big Data off of your to-do list in 2017, email firstname.lastname@example.org
