For decades now, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been seeping into the collective imagination. Some may mistakenly think of AI as a buzz term, but the truth is that AI is already instrumental in helping us complete a number of our everyday tasks. From filtering and sorting search results to predicting what word we’ll type next, AI is all about helping humans process information faster so that we can all be more efficient. 

AI is a data-driven technology, which means its potential is rapidly increasing as data becomes more and more available from so many growing sources. In these unprecedented times, it’s important to start thinking bigger. 

How can we use AI to help improve the state of the world on a global scale? 

AI has the ability to learn patterns, predict outcomes, and make data-driven decisions, doing so quicker and more efficiently than most manual human processes. When applied to global efforts towards human rights, disaster relief, accessibility and sustainability, AI has the potential to make the world safer and cleaner for everyone.

The Solution: It All Starts with Data Modernization

Being data-driven is essential to being AI-ready, and the most efficient way to accomplish both is through data modernization. Data modernization is the forward-thinking move from on-prem IT infrastructure to a public cloud computing platform, like Microsoft Azure. These platforms use the standard cloud computing model, in which a service provider makes resources like storage, as well as applications and virtual machines (VMs), available online. 

Although it is possible to get AI-ready with the more traditional on-prem solutions, it tends to be quite complex, and much more costly. Being in the cloud simplifies a variety of key tasks  such as creating connections to external data sources, and facilitating APIs to expose data views. In addition to streamlining AI-readiness, being in the cloud offers a number of other benefits:

  • Increased data flexibility
  • Increased ability to be data-driven

To make this a reality, it’s important that we not only embrace a data-driven future, but approach it ethically and with the good of everyone in mind. What might an AI for Good future look like?

Imagine a world in which AI can see for people with vision impairments, accurately describing their scenery or notifying them to a friend’s approach. Or,  a world in which custom speech models transcribe speech-to-text in real-time, using clean and accurate language. Now, think bigger, and imagine a world in which relief aid can be sent ahead of schedule, using seeing AI to avoid roadblocks. The predictive power of AI solutions can even be vital to creating a sustainable future, allowing us to make data-driven decisions about how to best address environmental challenges.

With strong AI strategies, designed around ethical policies, the AI for Good future is not out of our reach. In fact, we are currently in the early stages of seeing some of these ideas come to life, and data modernization is the first step.
